ADHD assessment - adult

What does this involve?

Assessments are typically completed over an extended 3 hour session, in person.

The assessment involves a clinical interview which allows us to understand the different ways in which ADHD may be impacting your life. Where possible and with your permission, we may also ask for somebody who knows you well (e.g. a partner or a parent) to join this session or we may arrange a time to speak with them on the phone. This helps us to better understand how your difficulties may have presented over time and in different settings.

You will also be asked to complete a computerised task, called a QB check, as part of this assessment. This test is designed to measure the core symptoms of ADHD including inattention, activity and impulsivity.

What do I need to bring to an assessment?

Please bring glasses, if required, and a hairband. It is important that your hair is kept away from your face during the computerised test.

What happens after the assessment?

After your assessment, we review all the information we have gathered and carefully consider within our team whether the diagnostic criteria has been reached.

A feedback session will be arranged in order to share the results and to think together about next steps. We will discuss who best to share the diagnosis with and begin to support you to understand this diagnosis and how it might fit for you. Some individuals will benefit from further post-diagnostic support. We will also discuss whether you would like to consider medication as a treatment option and if so can refer you to Dr Abigail & Associates who we work in partnership with.

You are welcome to bring a partner, friend or family member with you to this appointment.

If a diagnosis is not given, we will talk you through why this decision was reached and support you to better understand what else may contribute to the things you are finding difficult. We will then help you to think about where to go next and whether you would benefit from any other support.

You will be provided with a full written report following your assessment. You will have the opportunity to review a draft copy before the final report is sent to you. We aim to provide this within 4 weeks of your assessment date.
